1950s brick rambler complete remodel.
A typical brick rambler offers endless design possibilities. Brick is the essence of ancient dwellings. It is beautiful and requires no maintenance. It is also the material that still represents Arlington’s past.
Many brick dwellings are demolished and replaced with larger, cheaper versions of the American dream. This project wants to set a new example of what can be done with a conservative budget and an energy-conservation mindset.
Though the residence underwent a full remodel by going from three bedrooms to five bedrooms, no changes were made to the footprint and all the existing brick and block walls were pre- served. 16” deep I-Joists span the entire width of the house and make full use of the load- bearing qualities of brick and block walls. The interior layout was completely reconfigured according to the new functional needs of a family of four.
Arlington Green Home Choice was involved from the beginning and the program’s principles guided the design process.
Exterior cladding materials were inspired by the brick's color palette.
